How Much Liquid Chalk to Use: A Small Dot Is Enough

Posted by Yannick Ring on
Odyssey Liquid Chalk 80 mL bottle: a small dot is enough

If your liquid chalk feels like it takes forever to dry, flakes off, or runs out in two weeks, you are almost certainly using too much. Here is the amount that works, and why.

The amount: a small dot

Squeeze a small dot into one palm, about the size of a fingertip. That is enough for both hands. Rub your palms together and work it across your palms and fingers until the layer is even. A little goes a long way, and the even layer is what holds, not the thickness.

Why more is worse

A thick coat takes longer to dry because the alcohol has more to evaporate through. Once it does dry, the thick spots flake where your hand creases and leave bare patches, which is the opposite of what you wanted. A thin, even layer dries in seconds and stays put. With Odyssey Liquid Chalk the formula does the spreading for you: cyclomethicone carries the chalk evenly across the skin before the alcohol flashes off, so a small dot goes further than you expect.

How long it takes to dry

A few seconds. Apply a small amount, spread it evenly, and lift. If you are waiting a minute for it to dry, use less next time.

When to reapply

One coat holds through your working sets. Most lifters apply once before their first working set of an exercise and again when they change exercises. Lifters with very sweaty hands tell us the same: they used to reapply every set with other chalk and now apply once per exercise. If the bar starts rolling before that, dry your hands with a towel first and then apply again, because chalk on wet hands will not bond.

How long a bottle lasts

Used this way, one 80 mL bottle lasts about a month of regular training. Heavy users who train more often get through it faster. If you are emptying a bottle in a week, go back to the small dot.

Three habits that help

  • Dry hands first. Towel off sweat, then chalk.
  • Spread, do not pile. Even beats thick.
  • Close the cap. Every Odyssey bottle ships with a spare cap so a lost or cracked one does not dry out your chalk.

Odyssey Liquid Chalk is custom formulated for lifters, dries in seconds with no dusty cloud, and is backed by a 90-day money-back guarantee.
