Why Odyssey Liquid Chalk Is Custom Formulated: The Four-Ingredient Formula

Posted by Yannick Ring on
What is inside Odyssey Liquid Chalk: four ingredients, each with a job

Most people assume liquid chalk is liquid chalk. Magnesium carbonate, alcohol, done. That is exactly what cheap liquid chalk is, and it is why it rubs off a set or two after you apply it. Odyssey Liquid Chalk is custom formulated for lifters, with four ingredients that each do one job. Here is what they are and why they are in the bottle.

The two-ingredient problem

Chalk plus alcohol will dry on your hands. What it will not do is stay there. With nothing to spread the chalk evenly or bind the dry layer to your skin, the coat goes on patchy, flakes where it is thick, and wears through where it is thin. That is the complaint you see in reviews of budget liquid chalk over and over: comes off, constant reapplication. We built our formula to answer that one complaint.

The four ingredients

Magnesium carbonate

The chalk itself. It creates the dry layer that absorbs moisture and gives the knurling something to bite. Same mineral as block chalk, delivered differently.

Isopropyl alcohol

The carrier. It keeps the chalk suspended in the bottle and then evaporates in seconds once it is on your skin, which is what lets you chalk up right before a set instead of minutes before.

Silica silylate

The finish. It gives the dried layer a smooth, dry-touch feel instead of a gritty crust, so the coat is even across the palm and fingers rather than piled in the creases.

Cyclomethicone

The spreader. It carries the chalk evenly across your hands before the alcohol flashes off, so you get one consistent layer from a small dot instead of streaks.

What that adds up to

  • Dries in seconds, with no dusty chalk cloud
  • Stays on your hands, not on the bar
  • Sweat and oil resistant, helps fight sweat before it weakens your grip
  • A little goes a long way: a small dot covers both hands, and one 80 mL bottle lasts about a month of training

What lifters say about reapplying

These are verified reviews of Odyssey Liquid Chalk, quoted as written.

DUDE I LOVE THIS CHALK. I have super sweaty hands and I usually have to reapply every set with my old chalk. But with this liquid chalk I only have to reapply once after every excersise!!!

Amazing chalk! Not nearly as messy as some other options and it lasts much longer as well, would highly recommend!

Kyle Boileau, verified buyer

This liquid chalk dries super fast and a little goes a long way, so you don't have to keep reapplying it.

Tested where it counts

We developed the formula alongside elite deadlifters. Nonso Chinye, IPF World Record holder, pulled 420 kg (926 lb) with it on his hands. The full story is in Nonso Chinye's 926 lb deadlift and the chalk on his hands, and the ingredient-by-ingredient breakdown continues in liquid chalk ingredients explained.
