Liquid Chalk for Powerlifting: Squat, Bench and Deadlift

Posted by Yannick Ring on
Odyssey Liquid Chalk for powerlifting, 926 lb deadlift tested

Powerlifting is the whole brand at Odyssey. We develop our chalk alongside elite deadlifters, and the number on the bottle, 926 lb, is Nonso Chinye's IPF world record deadlift, pulled with Odyssey Liquid Chalk on his hands. Here is how the chalk fits into each of the three lifts.

Deadlift

This is where grip decides the lift. Whether you pull hook grip, mixed grip or double overhand, moisture between your skin and the knurling is what lets the bar roll out. Chalk your palms and fingers before your first working set, spread it evenly, and let it dry for a few seconds. One coat holds through the working sets. For a top single, dry your hands with a towel and apply a fresh thin layer. The deadlift chalk guide goes deeper on grip styles.

Bench press

Chalk matters less for holding the bar and more for keeping your hands exactly where you set them. A chalked hand does not creep on the knurling during a long pause. The bigger bench problem is your upper back sliding on the pad, which chalk on your hands cannot fix. That is what the Odyssey Bench Mat is for, and a lot of our lifters run both: chalk on the hands, mat under the back.

Squat

Low-bar squatters chalk their hands to keep the bar from shifting on the back, and some chalk the upper back itself in gyms that allow it. Liquid chalk on the hands gives you the hand side of that without a cloud on the platform.

Why powerlifters pick liquid

  • It stays. A thin, even layer that dries onto the skin instead of a coat that sheds. One coat through the working sets.
  • It is clean. No dusty chalk cloud, nothing left on the bar, nothing on your singlet or your clothes.
  • It works in more gyms. Many commercial gyms ban loose chalk. A bottle in your bag does not need permission. See what to do when your gym bans chalk.
  • It is compact. An 80 mL bottle fits a gym bag pocket and lasts about a month of training.

Liquid, chunks, or both

Plenty of powerlifters keep both. Liquid for every session and every gym. Chunked chalk, like Immortal Grip, the chalk we make with Professional Weak Guy and Immortal Legacy, for a thick coat on the heaviest pulls where loose chalk is allowed. Nonso uses both. Read liquid chalk vs block chalk for the full comparison.

The formula

Odyssey Liquid Chalk is custom formulated for lifters: magnesium carbonate for the dry layer, isopropyl alcohol so it dries in seconds, silica silylate for a smooth dry-touch finish, cyclomethicone to spread it evenly. Four ingredients, each with a job. Why that matters is in why Odyssey Liquid Chalk is custom formulated.
