How to Use Liquid Chalk for Lifting (Step by Step)
Posted by Yannick Ring onLiquid chalk does the same job as loose chalk, a dry layer between your skin and the bar, without the cloud. The difference is in how you apply it. Too much and it stays tacky. Too little and you are reaching for the bottle again two sets later. Here is the routine that works.
What liquid chalk actually is
Most liquid chalk is magnesium carbonate, the same mineral as block chalk, suspended in alcohol. You spread it on, the alcohol evaporates in a few seconds, and what is left is a thin, even chalk layer that stays put. Odyssey Liquid Chalk uses four ingredients, each with a job: magnesium carbonate for the dry layer, isopropyl alcohol for the fast dry, silica silylate for a smooth dry-touch finish, and cyclomethicone so it spreads evenly before it dries down.
Step by step
- Start with dry hands. Wipe off sweat first. Chalk bonds to skin, not to water.
- Use a small amount. A coin-sized drop is enough for both hands. Customers say it in their own words: a little goes a long way.
- Spread it evenly. Rub it across your palms and along your fingers, the parts that touch the bar. Do not forget the pads at the base of your fingers.
- Let it dry. Give it a few seconds with your hands open. You will feel it turn from wet to dry and slightly powdery.
- Lift. Grab the bar as normal. The layer is on your hands, not on the bar, so there is no mess left behind.
When to reapply
This is where liquid chalk earns its keep. Instead of chalking between every set, most lifters reapply once per exercise. One customer put it plainly in her review: she used to reapply every set, and now she applies once per exercise. Another wrote that one solid application lasted through all her working sets. If your hands sweat heavily, check your palms between sets and top up when the layer starts to thin.
Common mistakes
- Applying to wet hands. It will not bond and it will not dry.
- Using too much. Excess product stays tacky and takes longer to dry. Less is better.
- Not letting it dry. Grabbing the bar while it is still wet smears it around. Wait the few seconds.
- Chalking the bar instead of your hands. Liquid chalk is for your skin. Keep the bar clean and the gym happy.
Why lifters switch to liquid
No dust cloud, no chalk on your clothes, and nothing left on the equipment. Odyssey Liquid Chalk was developed alongside elite deadlifters. Nonso Chinye, IPF World Record holder in the deadlift, pulled 926 lbs (420 kg) with it on his hands. The 80 mL bottle fits in a gym bag pocket, and it ships fast from Odyssey Products in Ottawa, Canada, backed by a 30-Day guarantee.
