Chalk for Strongman: Deadlifts, Axle, Farmers and When Tacky Takes Over
Posted by Yannick Ring on
Strongman punishes grip more than any other strength sport. Thick handles, long carries and implements covered in other people's chalk all add up. The right chalk depends on the event.
Event by event
| Event | Grip demand | What works |
|---|---|---|
| Deadlift (bar, frame, car) | Max crush grip, often for reps | Liquid base plus block or chunked on top; straps where the rules allow |
| Axle | Thick bar, open hand | Liquid chalk for an even coat across the whole palm |
| Farmers and frame carries | Long holds with sweat building | Liquid first, re-coat before each run |
| Atlas stones | Hugging, not gripping | Tacky on forearms and hands where allowed; chalk works against tacky |
| Log press | Neutral handles | Light chalk |
Why layer liquid and block
Strongman implements are handled by many athletes, so they are often already coated. A liquid base bonds to your skin and stays put under the chalk on the handle. Block or chunked on top gives a thick coat for a max deadlift or a heavy frame. Odyssey Liquid Chalk is the base; Immortal Grip is our chunked chalk for the top layer.
Tacky and chalk do not mix
On stones, many athletes use tacky (a sticky, resin-based grip aid) on their forearms and hands. Chalk kills tack, so chalk only where you need it and keep it off your forearms on stone day. Rules on tacky vary by competition and organizer; read the athlete briefing.
Grip and skin care
- File calluses; thick handles tear them.
- Wash tacky off with oil or a dedicated cleaner, then soap.
- Moisturize at night after heavy grip days.

Questions lifters ask
What chalk do strongman athletes use?
Usually liquid chalk as a base and block or chunked chalk on top for deadlifts, carries and axle. Stones often use tacky instead of chalk.
Can you use chalk and tacky together?
Not on the same spot: chalk kills tack. Keep chalk on the hands for bar events and off the forearms on stone day.
Is liquid chalk good for farmers carries?
Yes. It stays on through long holds; re-coat before each run.
