Liquid Chalk for Golf: Can It Stop Sweaty Hands on the Grip?
Posté par Yannick Ring le
A club twisting in your hands at impact is the golf version of a barbell sliding out of a deadlift grip: sweat between skin and grip. Hot rounds, humid courses and nerves on the back nine all make it worse. Liquid chalk is a simple way some golfers deal with it.
Does liquid chalk work for golf?
It dries the skin and leaves a thin layer of magnesium carbonate on your hands, so the grip stays where you set it. Because it bonds to the skin instead of sitting on top as dust, it does not leave a cloud on your clothes or a white mess on the grips.
Gloves vs chalk
| Glove | Liquid chalk | |
|---|---|---|
| Hand covered | Usually lead hand only | Both hands |
| When wet | Loses grip, needs drying or swapping | Reapply a small dot |
| Feel | Material between you and the grip | Bare-hand feel |
Many golfers use both: chalk on the trail hand, or a small amount under the glove on very humid days.
How to use it on the course
- Before the round, rub a small dot into both palms and fingers.
- Let it dry for a few seconds before you grip a club.
- Reapply every few holes or when your hands start to feel damp.
- Apply it to your hands only. Do not put anything on the clubface.
What about the rules?
Golfers commonly use gloves, towels and drying agents on their hands for grip. What the rules restrict is changing how the club performs, such as putting a substance on the clubface. If you play in competitions, check with the committee or your local rules before you rely on anything new.
Take care of your grips and hands
- Wipe your grips with a damp cloth after the round to keep them tacky.
- Wash your hands and moisturize at night; alcohol-based products dry the skin.
Odyssey Liquid Chalk is a thick, four-ingredient formula built for heavy grip work. It was made for lifting and climbing, so for golf, start with a very small amount. More on the cause in sweaty hands and grip.

Questions lifters ask
Can you use chalk for golf?
Many golfers use drying agents like chalk on their hands for sweaty grips. Apply it to your hands only, never the club, and check local competition rules.
Is liquid chalk better than a golf glove?
They do different things. A glove covers one hand and loses grip when soaked; liquid chalk covers both hands and can be reapplied. Many golfers use both.
Will liquid chalk damage my golf grips?
It bonds to your skin rather than coating the grip. Wipe grips with a damp cloth after the round to keep them clean.
