Gifts for Powerlifters (2026): What Lifters Actually Want, From People Who Lift
Posted by Yannick Ring on
Buying for a powerlifter is hard because the obvious gifts are the wrong ones. A belt is personal. Knee sleeves have to be the exact size, and if they compete, the exact approved brand. Shoes, same. What lifters actually want is the stuff they use every session, run out of, or never got round to buying themselves. This guide is written by lifters, and yes, we sell some of what is on it; we say so where we do.
Rule one: nothing that needs a size
Belts, sleeves, wraps with specific stiffness, singlets, shoes. Unless you have their current one in your hands to read the label, skip it. The gift that does not fit is a gift that gets returned, and competition gear often has to be on a federation's approved list as well.
Rule two: consumables are never wrong
Chalk. Every lifter uses it and every lifter runs out. Two forms:
- Odyssey Liquid Chalk (ours). Works in commercial gyms that ban loose chalk because it makes no cloud and leaves nothing on the bar. Four-ingredient formula, 80 mL bottle with a spare cap, rated 5.0 out of 5 by 60 verified buyers. Nonso Chinye pulled 420 kg (926 lb) with it on his hands. If the lifter trains anywhere other than a dedicated powerlifting gym, this is the one.
- Immortal Grip Chalk (ours). Premium chunked block chalk made with Professional Weak Guy and Immortal Legacy. For the lifter whose gym allows loose chalk and who wants the thick feel on a max pull. Nonso uses it too.
Not sure which? The Grip Stack is both, and the 3, 6 and 12-month supplies solve the running-out problem for a while. Read liquid vs block chalk if you want to understand the difference first.
Tape, wrist wraps in a standard length, a lifting notebook. Cheap, useful, no sizing. Good stocking fillers from any brand.
Rule three: fix the problem they complain about
Listen for the complaint. Powerlifters have a few standard ones, and each has a gift.
- "The benches at my gym are so slippery." This is the Odyssey Bench Mat (ours). It lies flat on any bench under the upper back so leg drive goes into the bar instead of sliding them up the pad. Tested by 700 lb+ benchers, rated 4.98 out of 5 by 208 reviewers, and it is exactly the kind of thing lifters do not buy themselves until they try one. One review, as written: "Originally bought this to see if it lives up to the hype, it does." (Noah B)
- "My grip gives out before my back does." Chalk first (above). If they already chalk, a set of grip trainers or fat grips from any brand.
- "My hands are wrecked." A good hand balm and tape. Hook grip lifters in particular. Our hook grip guide explains why their thumbs hurt.
- "I can never find my stuff." A proper gym bag with a shoe compartment. Boring, beloved.
Rule four: when in doubt, let them choose
An Odyssey gift card (ours) is delivered by email, never expires, and covers the mat, both chalks and the bundles. Most lifting brands offer the same. A gift card to a brand they already follow is not a cop-out; it is the gift that is guaranteed to get used.

Questions lifters ask
What is a good gift for a powerlifter?
Consumables and setup tools they use every session and do not need sized: chalk, a bench mat, wrist wraps in a standard length, or a gift card to a lifting brand they already follow. Avoid belts, knee sleeves and singlets unless you know the exact size and brand.
Is chalk a good gift for a lifter?
Yes, it is the safest gift in strength sport. Every lifter uses it and runs out. Liquid chalk works in gyms that ban loose chalk; block chalk is the classic for heavy pulls where it is allowed.
What should I not buy a powerlifter?
A belt (width, stiffness and closure are personal), knee sleeves (sizing is exact and federation-specific), shoes, and a singlet. If they compete, their gear is often approved-list specific.
What is a good gift for someone who benches at a commercial gym?
A bench mat. It stops the upper back sliding on slick gym benches, works on any bench, and is the kind of thing lifters do not buy themselves until they try one.
