Best Chalk for Deadlifts: Liquid, Block, or Both?

The deadlift is the lift where grip actually decides reps. Every chalk is the same mineral, magnesium carbonate, so "best chalk for deadlifts" is really a question about form: loose, block or liquid, and in which gym. Here is how each behaves on a heavy pull, what the strongest lifters on our roster do, and how to choose.

What chalk is doing on a deadlift

Your hands sweat, the bar is steel, and sweat turns the knurling into a slide. Magnesium carbonate absorbs moisture and adds friction between skin and bar. On a deadlift the load tries to roll the bar out of your fingers, so the chalk has to survive the bar rolling and, in a hook or mixed grip, the skin dragging under it. That is where the forms differ.

Loose and block chalk

Block chalk is pressed magnesium carbonate you crush and rub on. It gives an immediate, thick, powdery layer and it is easy to build up for one maximal pull. The cost is that it sits on top of the skin: it comes off onto the bar, into the air and onto your clothes, and it needs reapplying between sets. Many commercial gyms ban or restrict it for the mess. Where you can use it, it is still what most lifters want in their hands for a third attempt.

Odyssey's block option is Immortal Grip, a premium chunked chalk made with Professional Weak Guy and Immortal Legacy. It took months of development to dial in the moisture level and density so it crushes and coats cleanly instead of crumbling to dust or sitting in hard lumps. Nonso Chinye uses it alongside the liquid. We explain the format in what chunked chalk is.

Liquid chalk

Liquid chalk suspends magnesium carbonate in alcohol. Spread a small dot, the alcohol evaporates in seconds, and the chalk bonds to dry skin as a thin layer. Nothing floats in the air, nothing is left on the bar, and because the layer is bonded rather than loose it survives mixed and hook grip. Odyssey Liquid Chalk is a four-ingredient formula built for lifters: magnesium carbonate, isopropyl alcohol, silica silylate for a dry-touch finish and cyclomethicone so it spreads evenly before it dries.

Is it strong enough for a real deadlift? Nonso Chinye, IPF World Record holder in the deadlift, pulled 420 kg (926 lb) with Odyssey Liquid Chalk on his hands. Below that, verified reviewers put their own numbers on it:

It's the best chalk I've ever used, and I use it to pull in the 700s and it performs great. It dries very quick and lasts for multiple sets.

Tyler Dodd, verified buyer

I have pulled 650+ with this chalk many times and it's never failed me.

This is the best chalk in the game right now you will never miss a deadlift with this chalk

Head to head on the deadlift

Block / chunked Liquid
Feel on a max pull Thick, powdery, familiar Thin, dry, bonded to skin
Survives hook / mixed grip Shears off the thumb Stays on through the rep
Reapplication Most sets Usually once per exercise
Commercial gyms Often banned Usually allowed, no cloud, clean bar
Carry Pouch or bag 80 mL bottle in a pocket

The method the strongest lifters use: both

For a competition-style max attempt where block is allowed, layer them. Dry your hands, apply a small dot of liquid chalk to palms, fingers and thumbs, let it dry fully, then crush block chalk over it. The liquid gives a layer that will not shear off the thumb; the block gives the thick top coat you can feel. Odyssey sells the pair as the Grip Stack for lifters who want both in the bag.

How to choose

Both Odyssey chalks ship fast from our US warehouse to the US, Canada and worldwide, and both carry a 90-day money-back guarantee. Start with the Liquid Chalk, add Immortal Grip when you want block for your heaviest pulls.

Questions lifters ask

What chalk do powerlifters use for deadlifts?

Magnesium carbonate in some form: loose or block chalk where the gym allows it, liquid chalk where it does not, and often both layered for a max attempt. Nonso Chinye's 420 kg (926 lb) pull was made with Odyssey Liquid Chalk on his hands.

Is liquid chalk strong enough for heavy deadlifts?

Yes. Beyond the 926 lb pull, verified Odyssey reviewers report pulling in the 600s and 700s with it. It bonds to dry skin, so it survives mixed and hook grip.

What is chunked chalk?

Chunked chalk is block chalk broken into pieces you crush in your hands. Immortal Grip is Odyssey's premium chunked chalk made with Professional Weak Guy and Immortal Legacy, with the moisture and density dialed in over months of development.

Can I use liquid and block chalk together?

Yes. Apply liquid first and let it dry, then crush block over it. The liquid bonds to the skin; the block adds a thick top layer for a max pull.
