Spider Chalk vs Odyssey Liquid Chalk: Rosin Grip or a Pure Chalk Formula?

Posted by Yannick Ring on
Odyssey Liquid Chalk compared with Spider Chalk Black Widow and White Widow

Disclosure: we make Odyssey Liquid Chalk and the Odyssey Bench Mat. Details on other products come from each brand's own product pages (or the retailer listing named), checked November 3, 2026, and are quoted, not tested by us. Trademarks belong to their owners; we are not affiliated with them.

Verdict

The biggest difference is rosin. Spider Chalk's Black Widow and White Widow add rosin for tack, and White Widow adds an antiperspirant. Odyssey Liquid Chalk is pure chalk chemistry: magnesium carbonate, isopropyl alcohol and two texture agents. If you want tack for high-rep CrossFit work and your gym is fine with rosin, Spider Chalk is worth a try. If you want plain chalk with no tack and no residue on shared bars, a rosin-free formula is the simpler choice.

Where Spider Chalk is the better pick

  • Tack for high-rep work: rosin adds stickiness some athletes like on long, sweaty CrossFit sessions.
  • Extreme sweaters: White Widow's antiperspirant targets sweat directly, though Spider Chalk itself suggests trying the regular or Black Widow first because White Widow is concentrated.
  • Bigger bottle: an 8 oz option.

Where Odyssey is the better pick

  • Plain chalk feel: dry grip without tack, which many lifters prefer on a barbell they need to release cleanly. For meets, the IPF lists both resin and magnesium carbonates as allowed on the body; other federations and gyms differ on tacky substances, so check yours. See what the IPF rulebook says.
  • Shared equipment: no rosin residue on the bar or pull-up rig.
  • Heavy barbells: a thick coat developed alongside elite deadlifters and on the hands of a 926 lb world record pull.
  • No prep ritual: spread a small dot, let it dry, lift.

Questions lifters ask

Does Spider Chalk have rosin?

Black Widow and White Widow do, per Spider Chalk. White Widow also has an aluminum-free antiperspirant.

Is rosin allowed in powerlifting?

The IPF allows baby powder, resin, talc or magnesium carbonates on the body and attire, and nothing on the equipment. Rules differ by federation, so check yours.

Is Spider Chalk or Odyssey better for deadlifts?

For heavy barbell work without tack or residue, a rosin-free lifting formula like Odyssey is simpler. For tack on high-rep work, Spider Chalk Black Widow is built for that.
